Security & Verification

Trust Nothing.
Verify Everything.

Every Solid State Bitcoin coin is protected by a multi-layer security architecture combining air-gapped cryptography, blockchain immutability, and military-grade physical security. Here is exactly how it works.

SIX LAYERS OF SECURITY
An Unforgeable System

To counterfeit a Solid State Bitcoin coin, an attacker would need to simultaneously defeat six independent security layers. Each layer is independently verifiable by anyone in the world.

Air-Gapped Key Generation
Private keys never touch the internet
Blockchain Verification
100,000 sats locked forever on Bitcoin
Ceremonial Key Destruction
Private keys destroyed on video — publicly verifiable
GnuPG Signed NFC Chip
Cryptographically signed, permanently locked read-only
Physical Certificate
Anti-copy paper, holographic laminate, holographic seal
Distributed Ownership Ledger
3 hard drives, 2 locations, blockchain anchored monthly

LAYER ONE
Air-Gapped Key Generation

Every Bitcoin key pair for every coin is generated on a dedicated laptop that has never been connected to the internet and never will be. This is known as an air-gapped system — physically isolated from any network, making remote compromise impossible.

We use Ian Coleman's BIP39 Mnemonic Code Generator — an industry standard, open source tool trusted by the Bitcoin community worldwide. The software is verified before installation using ClamAV antivirus, and all USB drives are scanned before use.

Each key generation session is filmed. Viewers can see the seed phrase and private key generated on screen (with sensitive details blurred), the public address extracted, and the application closed — with the private key never written down, stored, or transmitted.

Ian Coleman BIP39 Generator
Industry standard open source key generation. Audited by the Bitcoin community. Available at iancoleman.io/bip39
ClamAV Antivirus
All software and USB drives scanned for malware, trojans and keyloggers before use on the air-gapped machine
Public Addresses Only
Only public addresses leave the air-gapped machine via USB. Private keys never leave. Ever.
Filmed on Video
The entire generation process is filmed and published. Anyone can watch and verify the process was followed correctly.
2
LAYER TWO
Bitcoin Funding & Key Destruction

Once all public addresses have been generated and exported from the air-gapped machine, they are transferred to an online computer via USB. At this point the private keys no longer exist anywhere — they were never stored and were only briefly visible during the air-gapped generation session.

Each public address is then funded with exactly 100,000 satoshis (0.001 BTC). The funding transaction is recorded on the Bitcoin blockchain permanently and is publicly visible to anyone.

The private key destruction ceremony is filmed and published on our YouTube channel. The video shows the air-gapped machine, the key generation process, and the final irreversible destruction of all private key material. The Bitcoin is permanently and provably unspendable.

WHAT THIS MEANS FOR YOU
The 100,000 sats on your coin can never be moved — by us, by you, or by anyone else. Ever.
You can verify the balance yourself right now at mempool.space using the address on your certificate.
The funding transaction ID on your certificate links directly to the blockchain record — permanent and immutable.
No power source required to hold the value — the Bitcoin exists on the blockchain independent of the physical coin.
3
LAYER THREE
GnuPG Signed NFC Chip

Each coin contains an ST25TA on-metal NFC chip — a professional grade chip rated for 200 years of data retention, specifically designed to function correctly when embedded in metal objects.

Before writing to the chip, we use GnuPG (GNU Privacy Guard) — the same cryptographic standard used by governments, journalists and security professionals worldwide — to create a cryptographically signed payload containing the coin's verification data.

This signed payload is written to the chip using an NFC writer on the air-gapped machine. Once written, the chip is permanently locked into read-only mode. It can never be reprogrammed, overwritten, or tampered with.

To verify your coin, simply tap it with any modern NFC-enabled smartphone. No app required. Your browser opens instantly and displays the verification record.

ST25TA On-Metal NFC Chip
Professional grade chip designed specifically for metal embedding. 200 year data retention rating. Industry standard for high security applications.
GnuPG Cryptographic Signing
Military grade cryptographic standard. The same technology used to secure government communications, whistleblower documents and financial systems worldwide.
Permanently Locked Read-Only
Once programmed and locked, the chip cannot be altered by anyone. Not by us, not by you, not by any known technology.
Tap to Verify — No App Required
Any NFC-enabled smartphone running iOS or Android can verify the coin instantly. Works with iPhone 7 and later, and most Android phones from 2015 onwards.

LAYER FOUR
Physical Certificate Security

The Certificate of Authenticity and Title Deed is not an ordinary document. It is printed on professional anti-copy security paper that reveals hidden patterns and VOID markings when photocopied or scanned — making document duplication immediately detectable.

The entire certificate is then laminated with a holographic security coating that produces shifting rainbow patterns when tilted under light. This coating is impossible to replicate without specialist equipment and is the same technology used in passports, banknotes and government identity documents.

A holographic authenticity seal is applied to the face of the certificate, and the document is hand signed and dated by the issuing officer of Solid State Bitcoin.

CERTIFICATE SECURITY FEATURES
Anti-Copy Security Paper
VOID patterns appear on any photocopy or scan
Holographic Laminate Coating
Full document holographic overlay — same technology as passports
Holographic Authenticity Seal
Physical tamper-evident holographic sticker
QR Code — Live Blockchain Link
Links directly to the Bitcoin address on mempool.space
Hand Signed & Dated
Personally signed by the issuing officer of Solid State Bitcoin
Unique Serial & Document Numbers
Cross-referenced against our distributed ownership ledger
5
LAYER FIVE
Distributed Ownership Ledger

Ownership of every coin in the 250th Independence Set is recorded in a secure distributed ledger maintained across three separate hard drives stored in safes at two undisclosed geographic locations.

This distributed architecture means there is no single point of failure. Fire, theft, or hardware failure at one location cannot compromise the ownership record — the other copies remain intact and authoritative.

Ownership transfers are processed on the 1st of every month. To transfer ownership of your coin, both the physical coin and the original Certificate of Authenticity must be presented. The new owner's details are recorded in the ledger and a new certificate is issued.

On the 1st of every month, a cryptographic hash of the current ownership ledger is anchored to the Bitcoin blockchain using an OP_RETURN transaction — creating a permanent, publicly verifiable record of the ledger state that cannot be altered retroactively.

LEDGER ARCHITECTURE
3 hard drives — geographically distributed
2 secure locations — safes at undisclosed addresses
Monthly blockchain anchor — OP_RETURN hash on Bitcoin
Monthly transfer window — processed 1st of every month
OP_RETURN Blockchain Anchoring

Each month, a SHA-256 hash of the ownership ledger is embedded in a Bitcoin transaction using the OP_RETURN opcode. This creates a permanent, tamper-proof record on the blockchain. Anyone can verify the ledger has not been altered by hashing the current ledger file and comparing it to the on-chain record.

LAYER SIX
The Physical Coin

The physical coin itself is the final security layer. Each coin is precision milled from solid metal with a dedicated cavity for the NFC chip. The coin is then individually laser engraved by a local Australian engraver — producing a unique relief that is extraordinarily difficult to replicate.

A holographic epoxy resin coating is then hand applied to both faces of the coin — producing the characteristic rainbow iridescence visible in our renders. This coating protects the engraved surface and adds a final layer of physical authenticity that is immediately recognisable and impossible to fake at scale.

The combination of the precision milled blank, individually laser engraved art, embedded NFC chip, and holographic epoxy coating produces a collector piece unlike anything else in existence.
